The police:
Eleven police went to Antarctica, ten officers worked on the mountain range recovering bodies and officer worked back at McMurdo base. One of the passengers aboard the plane was a constable who was twenty-six years of aged, who won a raffle ticket to go aboard the plane.
The effects on police of having to recover bodies for police was insomnia, weak of appetite, issue’s in there social life and had issues thinking straight. Some police’s effects lasted up to 20months.
Superintendent Jim Morgan was affected from the experience of going to Antarctica in the first two-three weeks by weak of appetite, night mares, and different eating habits and interrupted sleeping patterns. Young police officers found the situation very difficult having to cope with 280 unexpected deaths all at the same time.

On the 11th of December 1979, the second flight carry bodies of the people
on board the DC-10 arrived. The first 114 bodies were exanimated for the
possible causes of death. The pathology team were finished by 21st of
December 1979.

Over sixty people were involved in recovering bodies and belongings from the crash site. This took several weeks.
Back in New Zealand, other DVI team members went to Auckland and prepared to work with pathologists, dentists, police photographers, fingerprint experts and mortuary technicians on identifying the bodies and body parts.

Waikumete cemetery Memorial
Waikumete memorial is a place open to the public to morn for the people who died in the crash whenever they like to visit. The bodies which were unidentified are in a grave that inside have sixteen coffins. There are plaques are at the memorial for the Japanese tourists aboard the aircraft. Every year on the anniversary the area in crowed for people morning for the people who died on the air crafted.

the disaster a memorial service was held at Scott base.
In 2004
(25th anniversary) Sir Edmund Hillary read Bill
Manhires poem‘Erebus voices’. Sir Edmund Hillary lost a friend in the crash
called Phil Mulgrew. The service was one hour and a half long.
In 2009
Air New Zealand was criticised for the special ballot for relatives of victims
and only six where selected. Air New Zealand augured that it was imposable to
take anymore, bus man Mike Pero organized a charter flight for the other family
members at a cost ranging between 1400-8600 dollars.
On 30th anniversary
six relations of victims were not able to make it due to weather conditions, on
the anniversary a capsule in the shape of a koru was meant to be placed at the
site but instead was placed in January 2010
104 victim’s family members took part in a
remembrance flight to Scott base in February
2011.
